What is the Picturesque Towns program?
Guatemala City, Nov 26 (AGN).- The Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Inguat) explained what the program consists of Picturesque Townsafter Estanzuela, Zacapa, became the first in Guatemala.
According to Inguat, the objective of this initiative is to promote towns that have relevant cultural and natural characteristics. This is intended to strengthen the identity of these and the belonging of its inhabitants.
It also seeks to promote the conservation of the cultural and natural heritage of the towns, improve the urban image and its universal accessibility and promote local development.
In addition, Inguat emphasized that the Picturesque Towns program represents a solution to the degree of deterioration in the urban image that some destinations present due to the tourist overload due to high visitation or the loss of vernacular architecture due to the lack of territorial ordering plans.

Initially, the Picturesque Towns program identified nine places with relevant characteristics and initiatives:
- Flores Island, Peten
- San Juan del Obispo, in Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepequez
- Zacapa, Zacapa
- Estanzuela, Zacapa
- Livingston, Izabal
- San Cristobal Totonicapán, Totonicapán
- Quetzaltenango, Quetzaltenango
- Salcaja, Quetzaltenango
- Santa Catarina Palopo, Solola

According to Inguat, to identify these nine places, an investigation was carried out to determine the qualities and requirements necessary to be considered. Likewise, the cultural, historical and natural value of each one was taken into account.
Therefore, it was recalled that to be a picturesque town, certain criteria of sustainability, quality of services, infrastructure and improvement of the urban image must be met.
first picturesque town
On November 18, Estanzuela, Zacapa, became the first picturesque town in the country.
To achieve this, the Municipality of Estanzuela and Inguat worked hand in hand so that the place complied with the necessary requirements. Among them, cleaning, the rearrangement of road circulation, landscaping of green areas, regulation of signs and the implementation of a tourist safety program.
