Congress extends the propane subsidy for two more months and thus reference prices remain

The propane gas cylinder subsidy will continue in force during December 2022 and January 2023, after this Tuesday, November 22 an extension for two more months to the subsidy for the product that increases its demand will be approved for this time for the year-end parties.

With the vote of 107 deputies and of national urgency, the extension proposal was approved in Congress.

The current subsidy ends on November 30, but it will continue to be valid for 60 more days.

The subsidy is for Q0.80 for each pound of propane gaswhich represents discounts ranging from Q8 to Q28 for the cylinders of the 10, 20, 25 and 35 pound presentations.

The extension will be financed by a increase of Q100 million, product of the remaining cash balances.

According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, in Guatemala there are at least 1.8 million homes that use propane gas, which represents 9 million people, at a rate of five members per family.

Reference prices

  • 10 pounds – Q49 (already includes Q8 subsidy)
  • 20 pounds – Q98 (Q16 subsidy)
  • 25 pounds – Q122 (Q20 subsidy)
  • 35 pounds – Q171 (Q28 subsidy)
