Guatemala City, Nov 21 (AGN).- Guatemala chaired the XXVII session of the extraordinary conference of the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL), which was held in Mexico.
According to him Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex)The session was led by the Embassy of Guatemala in Mexico.
It was also mentioned that the initiative precedes the active role that the government of President Alejandro Giammattei has assumed in the international disarmament machinery, being consistent with his conviction to give due importance to OPANAL.
The meeting also urged the nuclear-weapon States to refrain from the use or threat of use not only of nuclear weapons, but of force in general.
Similarly, expressed his position by the events arising from the Ukrainian invasion by the Russian Federation.

About OPANAL
OPANAL is an intergovernmental body that was established in the Treaty of Tlatelolco. This was the instrument that established the first densely populated zone free of nuclear weapons and that inspired the establishment of other zones of this type in the world.
This body is made up of 33 countries, including Guatemala, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay and Uruguay.
As for Guatemala, the country signed the Treaty of Tlatelolco on February 14, 1967 and ratified it on February 6, 1970.
As part of OPANAL, the nation has signed other documents such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Treaty on the Complete Ban on Nuclear Tests; as well as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
