Health confirms 21 new cases and 115 recovered patients
Guatemala continues to register cases of monkeypox after tests carried out by the National Health Laboratory -LNS-, authorities reported this Friday, November 18.
The LNS has processed new samples in coordination with the laboratories of the Comprehensive Care Units -UAI- of the Roosevelt, San Juan de Dios and Regional de Occidente hospitals, between November 14 and 17.
After this process, the Ministry of Health confirms 21 new cases of monkeypox that correspond to infections 142 to 162, being 20 men and one woman, of them 20 residents in the department of Guatemala and one in Chimaltenango.
The patients reported having started with symptoms between October 4 and November 14.
All of them, between the ages of 18 to 46 years; They are currently isolated in their homes and Health personnel monitor them.
Until now, epidemiological investigation has determined that the new cases are not related to each other or to previously confirmed cases.
The data records 243 screened people, four cases remain probable and eight under investigation.
Until this Friday 162 confirmed cases are reported, of which 160 are men and two women; 73 suspected cases have been ruled out and 115 patients have recovered.
Monkeypox is a disease that It can be transmitted by contact with bodily fluids or skin lesions, by hugging, kissing, massage, sexual intercourse, and less frequently by contact with objects, clothingsheets and other objects for personal use, as well as surfaces that the sick person touched.
Dr. Lorena Gobern, head of the Department of Epidemiology, recommended avoiding contact with bodily fluids of people with skin rashes and close contact such as hugging, massage, kissing and sexual contact.
Clean and disinfect spaces, surfaces and objects of common use, especially those that have been touched by people with the disease.
The main symptom of monkeypox It is the appearance of welts and scabs that are not usually serious, but contagious. Other signs that may appear are malaise, fever, swollen glands, tiredness and fatigue, muscle pain, and headache.
When presenting the aforementioned symptoms it is important to go to the nearest health service.
