Estanzuela, Zacapa, becomes the first picturesque town in the country
Guatemala City, Nov 18 (AGN).- After meeting the criteria established to become a picturesque town, the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Inguat) gave the Municipality of Estanzuela the badge that formalizes its appointment as the first picturesque town in the country.
The Picturesque Towns program is promoted by the inguat with the purpose of contributing to the preservation of heritage and the development and diversification of the tourist offer.
With this achievement, Estanzuela takes a step forward in terms of tourism and it does so naturally because its population is amazing and unstoppable, said Anayansy Rodríguez, director of Inguat.
The official added that to name the picturesque town there was a series of coordination between different institutions and the work team of the municipality.
Today residents and visitors can appreciate a series of murals that portray local identity and add color to public spaces. This generates experiences, because when walking through the streets you have a different and special sense, pointed out.
The initiative
After due investigation, relevant characteristics and initiatives were established that allowed the nomination of nine places to be creditors of the picturesque town distinctive. These are the island of Flores, in Petén; San Juan del Obispo, Antigua Guatemala, in Sacatepéquez, and the city of Zacapa and Estanzuela, in Zacapa.
Also Livingston, Izabal; San Cristobal Totonicapán, Totonicapán; the city of Quetzaltenango; Salcaja, Quetzaltenango. and Santa Catarina Palopó, Sololá.
A picturesque town, in addition to fulfilling its image, must have the commitment of the local authorities to meet the established criteria. These are linked to cleaning, rearrangement of road circulation, landscaping of green areas, regulation of signs and implementation, and having a tourist safety program.

The Inguat has provided added value to the beauty of Estanzuela, making representative murals of its culture and tradition. This is part of the program Art and tourism, a country with more color. It has also provided support with painting to improve the facades of the main entrance to the municipality and its central area.
