Merchants from the Central Market, in zone 1 of the capital, called a press conference this Thursday, November 17, to give details regarding the prices they have established for beef, chicken and pork, Well, in recent days rumors have emerged about the value of the products they distribute.

According to the merchants, for several days there have been rumors that the price of beef, pork and chicken had an increase of Q5 per pound; However, this Thursday they denied it and showed concern, Well, that opens the door for distributors to make those adjustments. and with that the pocket of Guatemalans is affected.

In addition, they ensure that the increases that have occurred in recent weeks have been absorbed by themselves so as not to impact the economy of their clients, but now they fear a readjustment by distributors, which would bring them problems because they are no longer in a position to bear higher prices.

They assure that if there is another increase by the distributors, an adjustment would have to be made in the price to the public, although it would not be from Q5 as the rumors say.

They said that next week they will hold a meeting with their suppliers, with personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food to seek solutions, and one of them would be a subsidy, considered Carlos Hernández, representative of the meat suppliers.

“I ask the suppliers to put their hands on their conscience, that they look back where they come from, let’s remember that we owe ourselves to the final consumer”.

“We have absorbed certain increases from suppliers and they believe that we are going to continue supporting the increases and the one who is hurting is the final consumer. We are going to have a meeting with the productive chain and we hope to establish prices, but I can’t give them now because they already threatened us with a new increase for next week ”, Hernandez noted.

He added that it is necessary for the Government to get involved in the issue, because the situation becomes untenable for the most dispossessed families, for there are cases in which buyers order six half-pound pieces of meat.

Hernández said that the price of pork rose and that this is almost equal to the price of beef and points out that it is due to the fact that the demand increases due to the end of the year holidays.
