Socialize guidelines and technical standards for the tourism sector

Guatemala City, Nov 11 (AGN).- A workshop to disseminate technical standards for the organized tourism sector was held under the coordination of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (inguat) and the Ministry of Economy (Mineco).

The workshop, called Support for the Development of Sustainable Tourism, socializes the project promoted for the normalization and reactivation of tourist activity during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

From this account, Mineco, through the National Quality System (SNC) and Inguat, promote the project. This with the support of the Fund for Structural Reforms of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Productivity and competitiveness

In this sense, it was reported that the project responds to the National Quality Policy 2019-2032, approved through Government Agreement 169-2019.

In addition, it seeks to contribute to the country’s productivity and competitiveness, improving the conditions of national and international trade in goods and services. All this through the deployment and strengthening of the institutionalization of the SNC.

Likewise, it is part of the National Policy for the Development of the Tourism Sector of Guatemala 2012-2022 and the Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism 2015-2025.

For this reason, tourism is consolidated as the articulating axis of the nation’s development in line with sustainability.

In addition, within the activities of the project, work has been done with the tourism sector through the Technical Committee for Standardization 188 for Recreation, Leisure and Active Tourism Services., of the Guatemalan Standards Commission (Coguanor).

In addition, it addresses the general minimum requirements that must be met by internal and incoming tourism operating agencies that provide the service to climb mountains and volcanoes.

Added to this, those that tourist and aquatic transport of people in small boats must obey, as well as good practice guides.

Consequently, it contains the minimum requirements for providers of passenger tourist transport services in aquatic environments. Also those that must comply by sea, lake and river in national waters, using smaller vessels such as boats, boats and catamaran-type ferries.

Travel agency

Finally, it presents the requirements for the provision of the travel agency service. In this case, it specifies the requirements for the operation of these organizations.

In addition, it classifies them into outbound tourism travel agencies and wholesale travel agencies.

On the other hand, during the workshop it was shared that the National Standardization Council contributes to strengthening the country’s quality infrastructure. Also to the provision of services, according to the demands of the market to position the country as a sustainable tourist destination.

According to the Inguat, the tourism sector is very relevant within the gross domestic product (GDP). However, it points out that it has been affected by the competition of the services offered in the international market, as well as by the COVID-19 pandemic, for which the Government of Guatemala promotes this project for the normalization and reactivation of tourist activity. .
