Codred from Guatemala reports on agreements in dialogue platform

Guatemala City, Nov 14 (AGN).- The presentation of progress achieved in the territorial dialogue platform of the metropolitan region was the main theme of the recent meeting of the Departmental Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Cored) from Guatemala.

According to what was reported, one of the agreements is to increase the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This is the responsibility of the institutions and municipalities, which will have inputs for decision-making in territorial planning processes.

The commitment was also assumed to strengthen the capacities of municipal personnel for the implementation of land use plans, through the methodology defined by the Secretariat of Planning and Programming of the Presidency (Segeplan).

In addition, the existing ones in the municipalities will be analyzed, using technical-scientific processes to strengthen the implementation of the aforementioned plans.

Delegates of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) also referred to the events that have prevented territorial planning focused on disaster risk reduction in the metropolitan region.

In this sense, they made see the importance of socializing the link between the integral management in this matter with the strategy implementation to ensure the well-being of the population.

Another aspect in which emphasis was placed was the need to limit the rotation of personnel in charge of these planning processes, since this slows down the progress achieved.

Finally, there was talk about avoiding duplication of institutional efforts and strengthening coordination to achieve better results. Among the entities that make up the Codred de Guatemala and were represented in the assembly are:

  • departmental government
  • Conred
  • Guatemalan Social Security Institute
  • Telecommunications Superintendence
  • Secretary of Social Works of the President’s Wife
  • Ministry of Education
  • Ministry of Energy and Mines
  • Attorney General’s Office

There were also delegates from the National Youth Council, Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare Secretariat of the Presidency, as well as the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance.

On behalf of the latter, the Directorate of the Northeast Guatemala Health Area indicated that 115 cases of monkeypox have been detected in the country. Of these, 75.84% correspond to men.
