Guatemala and Korea will execute a project to modernize customs clearance

Guatemala City, Nov 9 (AGN).- Guatemala and Korea signed an exchange of notes that will allow the execution of a project focused on the technological modernization of customs clearance.

The crossing of notes was signed by Marco Livio Díaz, head of the Superintendence of Tax Administration (SAT)and Young-han, Director of Technology and Planning at Korea Customs.

In an official statement, the SAT explained that the project is expected to be executed from 2023 to 2026. Therefore, the necessary hiring and acquisitions will begin.

What does it consist of

To modernize customs clearance, 6 thousand 32 million dollars will be invested to update SAT’s computer systems.

Such modernization will also include artificial intelligence and data mining. This will increase the security of the logistics chain and streamline the institution’s processes.

Modernization

According to the SAT, the signing of the crossing of notes was registered as a follow-up to the project to modernize the electronic system of customs clearance, which was agreed in July.

In addition, this project focuses on the prevention of customs fraud and the improvement in the assertiveness of selectivity in customs to increase trade security and avoid unfair competition.

On October 24, Guatemala and Korea commemorated the 60 years of diplomatic relations, period in which the Asian country has supported with health, education, security, agriculture, technology and training projects, among others.

In addition, both nations are currently discussing Guatemala’s accession to Korea’s free trade agreement with Central America.

This would allow the binational trade relationship to be strengthened and to have a new export market for national products and vice versa.
