Germany achieves the two-time championship while the “Clockwork Orange” is born
The 1974 World Cup was played in Germany between June 13 and July 7. Germany won its second world championship.
In this championship the competition system changed, since there were no longer quarterfinal or semifinal games, but instead a second group stage, whose winners went on to the final.
This tournament is also remembered because there was a new trophy in dispute, after in 1970, Brazil stayed in property with Jules Rimet.
The participating teams were Democratic Germany, West Germany, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Scotland, Haiti, Italy, Holland, Poland, Sweden, Uruguay, Yugoslavia and Zaire.
The final was played between West Germany and the Netherlands, who after demonstrating their “total football” and commanded by Johan Cruyff earned the nickname “Clockwork Orange” and was the great favorite in the final.
However, Germany would end up winning 2 goals to 1 and thus achieving the two-time World Cup championship in which they hosted.
One day after the final, Prensa Libre published at the top of its front page: “Federal Germany fut world champion: defeated Holland”.
Despite the defeat, Prensa Libre headlined a note, the day after the final, as follows: “Dutch revolutionize soccer.” Then the note clarified: “Germany is champion again, but everyone will remember the “revolution” made by the Dutch with football on display throughout the tournament.”
The note also sentenced: “Holland, and it is a unanimous judgment among journalists in Munich, proved to be the team with the best football in the tournament.”
