This is what is known about the VAR Light technology that Fedefut and the National League tested in Cremas vs. Cobán

The National Football Federation of Guatemala and the National League tested the VAR Light technology in the match between Comunicaciones and Cobán Imperial on matchday 18 of the 2022 Opening Tournament.

This is part of an initiative where the authorities of Fedefut and the National League seek to implement technology for the development of arbitration in Guatemalan soccer.

The test, as previously reported, It was private and the images were not seen in the match broadcast. the only ones with access were the authorities of Fedefut, the National League and some teams. In addition, it was also clarified that the test carried out does not establish a commitment to establish the technology.

In Guatemala, the only time that the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) was used at the club level was in Concacaf international competition matches.

If the implementation is completed in Guatemala, it would become the first Central American country where it is used in the local League.

It is a sample that they bring us only to the directors. It cannot be public because it is not regulated yet. The idea is that they teach us how the technology that this company is offering us would work in a real match, that we can implement it, that the League teams agree and approve it in their assembly”, was what Gerardo Paiz, president of Fedefut, said before the broadcast for Tigo Sports.

What is VAR Light and how is it different from traditional VAR?

VAR Light has the same objective as traditional VAR, it seeks to help referees technologically during matches.

This has the same characteristics as VAR, however, it has a lower operating cost by using equipment with less configuration and fewer cameras, without affecting quality.

This tool was designed so that competitions with a limited budget can access the VAR.
