The 1958 FIFA World Cup was played in Sweden between June 8 and 29 of that year. 16 national teams participated.
The first report published by Prensa Libre on the World Cup being played in Sweden already highlighted Brazil, headlining that it was the “only Latin American victorious in the championship.”
In addition, he added that Argentina had lost in a “surprising” way against Germany, 3 goals to 1, despite the fact that the Europeans were the champions.
“Yesterday, the world soccer championship was inaugurated in Sweden, the sixth edition of the Jules Rimet Cup, with eight games played on the different courts set up for that purpose,” reads the chronicle of June 9, 1958.
The note shared space with the table of positions of the national championship of the Major League, the first three places were occupied by Communications, Municipal and Aurora.
Sweden, Federal Germany, Austria, France, Czechoslovakia participated in this World Cup. Hungary, Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Paraguay.
The final was played between Brazil and Sweden and ended with a score of 5-3 in favor of the South Americans, becoming the final with the most goals, a record that still stands today.
The top scorer of the tournament was Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals and the second place was occupied by a young Pelé, with 6.
A day after the final, Prensa Libre dedicated its main headline to the achievement, writing “Brazil is crowned world fut champion”. Inside, they add that Vava and Pelé were the best players in the final.
