Cesar George, head of forecasts at the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh), explained that the system is currently moving from the Caribbean, entering Belize, but due to its extension it has already caused abundant cloudiness and rains in Petén, Northern Transversal Strip and the region of Caribbean in Guatemala, where it is expected that it could continue its journey.
“Important rains have occurred in Melchor de Mencos and could persist in other regions of Petén, the Northern Transversal Strip and the Caribbean, this Wednesday and tomorrow, Thursday, November 3,” George said.
In addition, he recalled that unlike storm Julia, in the case of Lisa, apart from rain, it will also bring with it wind with speeds of between 40 and 60 km/h.
The expert said that upon entering Guatemala, Hurricane Lisa will be downgraded to a storm or possibly a tropical depression, but monitoring should be maintained.
Impact of Hurricane Lisa in Petén
The system will enter the country as a tropical storm on Thursday, November 3, and according to projections, this system will be degrading to a depression in Mexico by next Friday, November 4.
However, even if it loses strength once in the country, the rains caused by Lisa are expected to impact the area of the Mayan Biosphere. In Petén, the maximum alert is maintained due to rain and saturation of the soil, with the municipalities of Melchor de Mencos, San Andrés, Las Cruces and La Libertad, Dolores, Santa Ana and Poptún, being the ones that could be most affected.
The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) recorded damage to 19 homes in Melchor de Mencos since Wednesday, in addition to flooding in regions of Izabal.
Due to the alert, classes were suspended in that department and in Izabal, at least until next November 3. President Alejandro Giammattei declared that the level of damage and risk will be evaluated in the next few hours to determine if activities in other regions will be suspended.

According to the Insivumeh forecast, once it passes the territory and reaches the Gulf of Mexico, the mass of a cold front will keep Lisa in that area and even enter Guatemala again. If this happens, it is expected that the rains will occur in the remainder of this week until next Wednesday.

According to George, the forecast for Petén and the Northern Transversal Strip will be partially to totally cloudy, moderate to heavy rains and wind between 40 and 60 km/h. Similar conditions are expected for the Caribbean, with abundant cloudiness and, in addition, scattered rains or drizzles are not ruled out in the central area.
