Guatemala City, Nov 2 (AGN).- Art, color and tradition are mixed in the kite festivals of Santiago and Sumpango Sacatepéquez.
For this reason, the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Inguat) highlights this tradition as an attraction that each year attracts thousands of domestic and foreign tourists.
According to Ministerial Agreement 654-99, issued in October 1999, the Ministry of Culture and Sports established the tradition of the so-called giant kites as Cultural Heritage of Guatemala.
In this sense, the Government has confirmed its commitment to show the world the cultural riches of Guatemala and to preserve its legacy.
In addition to this, the State of Guatemala declared the technique of making the giant kites of Santiago and Sumpango Sacatepéquez as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation.
About the technique
In addition, work continues so that this technique can be included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco, in English).
The Santiago Sacatepéquez Giant Kite Festival is held every year on November 1 and 2 in the municipalities of Santiago and Sumpango, in commemoration of the Day of the Dead, on November 2.
In both places, kites from 6 to 17 meters are made in tribute to those who died during the year.
The smallest ones are elevated and others are made for festivals.
