Guatemala City, Nov 1 (AGN).- On Monday, the medical conference that took place as part of the visit of the hospital ship USNS Comfort. The act took place in the sports complex of Santo Tomás de Castilla, in Puerto Barrios, Izabal.
The activity was attended by the commanders of the Marine Infantry Brigade and the Caribbean Naval Command, dependencies of the Guatemalan Army.
The US Navy ship has more than a thousand beds and a crew of 8 officers and more than 53 enlisted personnel. Since last October 26, hundreds of residents of the department and surrounding places have been treated there, in branches such as the following:
- ophthalmology
- odontology
- gynecology
- pediatrics
- geriatric care
In addition to consultation and medical evaluation, the beneficiaries received medicine and some underwent surgery, depending on their ailments.

The bell
The mission of the hospital ship USNS Comfort is to visit eight countries, as part of the Continuing Promise campaign, of the United States Army Southern Command.
Military reservists from Guatemala supported US military personnel in their medical journeys. One of them took place in Livingston, where the soldiers were transferred by waterway.
The closing ceremony was attended by US Ambassador William Popp and thanked the support of state entities for the work of the aforementioned delegation.

The diplomat stated that it is a joint effort between both nations, with the aim of improving the quality of life of the population.
In addition, he reiterated the interest of the North American country to continue supporting Guatemala not only in medical matters but also in other areas, to generate more prosperity and security.
