Recommendations before an earthquake

  • The first reaction that we must have, although it is difficult, is to remain calm and transmit that feeling to those who are with us to prevent panic from causing us to have behaviors outside our judgment that can hurt us or others.
  • Locate the corners of the house, such as door frames, and get under them.
  • Choose a safe place inside the house. Crouch down, cover your head, and hold on to a stable structure; for example, under a table or desk. There are earthquakes so intense that they prevent us from standing, so it is best to crawl towards a safe object.
  • If there is no safe furniture, sit on the floor against an interior wall. If the house is made of adobe and has a heavy roof, go outside.
  • Stay away from windows, mirrors, shelves, hanging plants, ledges, and lamps that could become detached from their bases.
  • Don’t use the elevators; go down the stairs. Inside a building, stay inside this enclosure: don’t go out, don’t run and protect yourself.
  • When the shaking stops, evacuate the building in an orderly manner, following the evacuation route signs and heading to the previously established meeting points.
  • It is important not to spread rumors, to prevent the emotional condition from preventing you from acting correctly.
  • If it shakes when we walk on public roads, stay away from power poles, trees, windows, buildings, structures with cornices or old ones.
  • If we travel by vehicle, park it in a safe place as soon as possible, do not get out of it and do not obstruct the roads.
