Project promotes community tourism in Aguacatán
Huehuetenango, Oct 25 (AGN). – A group of 16 young people from Aguacatán is training as community tour guidesthanks to the strategic alliances promoted by the Government in Huehuetec territory.
The course consists of 180 hours and is taught by instructors from the Technical Training and Productivity Institute (Intecap). The intention is to provide the participants with knowledge so that they can develop in the aforementioned field and thus generate income for their family.
Once they complete their training and pass the corresponding evaluations, the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Inguat) will credit them.
With this effort, it is also expected that Aguacatán, a municipality prioritized by the Government, will make its attractions known nationally and internationally. Among the destinations that are sought to be promoted, the following stand out:
- Municipal head
- source of the San Juan River
- White River
- dry river
Community tourism is a management model based on ownership and self-management of the natural and cultural resources of the peoples. One of its characteristics is that it has a focus on social commitment, respect for the environment and equitable distribution of benefits.
The #INGUAT promotes community tourism, influencing the development of families living around this sector. An example of this is the Montecristo Trinational Reserve located in Esquipulas, Chiquimula.#TogetherLet’sGoForMore https://t.co/xC0lK1ofgP

About the alliance
The project is developed in coordination with international donors such as World Vision and the United States Agency for Development, which provide financing. It also has the support of the Cedimujer NGO, which provides the facilities for training.
Meanwhile, the Inguat provides educational and informative material that serves as a basis for the induction of the participants.
The governor of Huehuetenango, Jorge Juan de León, congratulated the implementation of this plan and indicated that these actions are added to those already carried out by the Government to improve the economy and prevent irregular migration.
He also noted that the President Alejandro Giammattei promotes alliances with civil society, international donors and the private sector, to support community actors in the generation of job opportunities, with an emphasis on the young population.
