They send a message for the 77 years of the United Nations Organization

Guatemala City, Oct 24 (AGN).- As part of the commitments of the Government of Guatemala, a commemorative act was held for the 77th anniversary of the United Nations Organization (UN).

This activity was attended by Mario Búcaro, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Miguel Barreto Sánchez, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations.

In this sense, both reiterated their commitment to continue working for the benefit of the social development of the population, for the creation of a better world.

In addition, they highlighted the joint work with the Government of the Republic to achieve the objectives of the Charter of the United Nations.

UN history

Mainly, the authorities reported that since its inception the UN was created with the aim of promoting peace and development in the world.

In this sense, they sought ways to increase the scope of their actions, which is why in 1945 the United Nations Charter was signed.

All this, with the support of delegates and member states, among which Guatemala appears as part of the founding countries of the UN.

Over time, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was achieved on December 10, 1948, which marked the beginning of the approval of international pacts and conventions.

From this account, Guatemala has participated in the decision-making of the most important agreements, as a national commitment and international responsibility.

However, it was not until 1964 when this system began its work in the country, after the Congress of the Republic approved Decree Law 238.

Said ruling allowed nine UN agencies to start work in the country to obtain results at the national level.

On support for Guatemala

For his part, the UN resident coordinator, Miguel Barreto, referred to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, climate change and war as part of the challenges facing society.

In that sense, he indicated that all these problems showed human vulnerability and the new challenges of the economic and social development of nations.

Addressing the challenges facing humanity requires articulated actions, both globally and locally, Barreto said.

From that account, he highlighted that over the years the UN has investigated projects related to:

  • peace
  • security
  • developing
  • environment
  • strong institutions

This as part of the five prioritized strategies that have been agreed with the Government of the Republic for the social development of the country.

Therefore, in addition to commemorating the years of the UN, the space was used to reiterate its commitments to multilateralism and thank the allies who have joined the efforts.

Guatemala at the UN

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Búcaro expressed that on behalf of President Alejandro Giammattei, Guatemala’s commitment to the provisions of the United Nations Charter is reiterated once again.

In addition, he indicated that this 77th anniversary is a reminder of the efforts of humanity to achieve peace and the international union for the respect of human rights.

Above all, it is an occasion that allows them as diplomatic bodies to raise their voices for all the countries that are still vulnerable and that have been affected by the war.

For this reason, Guatemala works jointly with government institutions and civil society to achieve the UN objectives, especially those of the 2030 agenda.

All this to achieve the development of the country in an integral way, involving everyone and leaving no one behind in the creation of a better world, it was emphasized.
