Guatemala City, Oct 19 (AGN).- In search of having updated geographic information that serves as a basis for the formulation of policies, strategies and projects for the benefit of the agro-productive and environmental sectors of the department of Guatemala, the Study of the determination of vegetation cover and land use.
The activity took place on Tuesday at the facilities of the Authority for the Sustainable Management of the Lake Amatitlán Basin (AMSA) and was led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA).
Among the data that the portfolio socialized, through the Directorate of Geographic, Strategic Information and Risk Management (Diger), it appears that 45.51% corresponds to agricultural territory and 43.9% to forests and semi-natural environments. This is the detail:
He also indicated that the investigation was based on three specific objectives set at the national level:
- Prepare the map of Vegetation Coverage and Land Use of the Republic of Guatemala, referring to the year 2020 at a scale of 1:50,000.
- Describe the current status of the different categories of land cover and use that exist in the country’s ecosystems.
- Establish a comparative analysis of the dynamics of changes in vegetation cover and land use between 2003 and 2020.

Governor Jorge Gramajo pointed out that the Study determination of vegetation cover and land use provides up-to-date information on vulnerable and high-risk areas in the department.
According to what he said, having these data will make it possible to establish inter-institutional strategies to prevent disasters. He added that this topic has a high impact by facts such as the undermining that have been registered in different points of the jurisdiction.
