They report on the recovery of the national electricity system

Guatemala City, Oct 17 (AGN).- The Minister of Energy and Mines, Alberto Pimentelreported at a press conference this Monday on the recovery process of the national electricity system, affected by the passage of the weather phenomenon Julia.

Thanks to the early warning issued by the Executive for the passage of Julia, since October 7 all areas of the system were in a situation of prevention, pointed out the owner of Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM).

The days with the greatest electrical difficulties were Sunday, October 9 and Monday, October 10. During this period, nine hydroelectric generation plants had problems dispatching energy, but it was possible to solve it with other generators.

Recovery in record time

The official stressed that the recovery of the electrical system was carried out in record time, achieving that to date 100% has been recovered.

The demand was covered on the most critical day (October 10). We recovered the network in record time. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, 3 of the 4 affected transmission lines were recovered, he pointed.

Of 167,000 households without availability of electrical resources due to distribution failures, the number fell to 108,000 households on Tuesday and 42,000 on Wednesday.

The most affected line was the one that connects San Juan Ixcoy and Barillas, municipalities of Huehuetenango, which were without electricity for at least 36 hours.

It is important to note that 167 thousand customers of the different electricity distributors recovered this service in just three dayssaid the head of the MEM.

Most of the damage was from falling trees, strong winds and damage to power poles.

Tropical Cyclone Julia entered the national territory on October 10, which caused continuous rains in the national territory.

The departments most affected by the passage of this natural phenomenon, according to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred), were:

  • Upper Verapaz
  • Izabal
  • Escuintla
  • Suchitepequez

That is why personnel from different government institutions are kept in readiness and as a preventive measure, 16,730 people were evacuated.

Likewise, 1,855 shelters remain enabled for the care of those affected by this natural phenomenon.
