Acisclo Valladares Urruela is sentenced in the US
The judge of the Southern District of Florida, José E. Martínez, sentenced this Monday, October 17, the former Minister of Economy and former director of corporate affairs of Comunicaciones Celulares SA, Acisclo Valladares Urruela, who was prosecuted for a money laundering case.
The file that documents the sentence indicates that Valladares must serve 12 months plus one day in prison, plus three years of probation and the payment of US$100 (about Q785) for procedural costs.
The full document on the details of the sentence in court has not been revealed, which is expected to be published in the next few hours. However, a chronology of events is included, which documents from the day of the arrest of Valladares Urruela, on October 22, 2020; as well as the hearings in which he participated in the US.
The sentence against Valladares Urruela, who was also Minister of Economy during the government of former President Jimmy Morales, is finalized after last July 19 before the Court of the Southern District of Florida accepted guilt for having participated in illicit monetary transactions, accusations that the Prosecutor’s Office of the same district had made on August 5, 2020.
In the accusation of conspiracy to launder money, the US Attorney indicated that the funds would have been used to pay bribes to officials in Guatemala.
