Court orders the capture of former Feci prosecutor Carlos Videz, accused of abuse of authority
The Ninth Multipersonal Criminal Court of First Instance issued an arrest warrant against the former prosecutor of the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity (Feci), Carlos Videz, who is accused of abuse of authority, a crime he would have committed by requesting the activation of the red alert of the International Police (Interpol) of a presumed implicated in illicit electoral financing, reported this Friday, October 14, the Public Ministry (MP).
The accusation against Videz derives from the request he made to Interpol to activate the international red alert to capture Julio Ligorría, who was the Guatemalan ambassador to the United States, and who was linked to the Construction and Corruption case.
“In follow-up to the investigation carried out by the Internal Affairs Prosecutor’s Office derived from a complaint in which it is indicated that Mr. Videz Navas as a public official in the performance of his position as prosecutor, Fiscal Agent of the Special Prosecutor against Impunity -FECI-, on August 29, 2017, possibly committed an illegal act to the detriment of the public administration, which consisted in the fact that at the time of making the steps to present the Interpol international red notice request, he included a crime for which it is not possible to request an international red alert”, points out the MP.
It adds that “in this sense, abusing the position he held as a fiscal agent of the Public Ministry, he requested the publication of the international red notice for a crime other than those already established, which he signed and sealed, knowing that the crime of illicit electoral financing was not included in the Interpol catalog of crimes in which the crimes for which it is appropriate to request the publication of the international red notice are detailed.
“By virtue of this, the Ninth Multipersonal Court of Criminal First Instance issued the arrest warrant for the crime of abuse of authority “concludes the Prosecutor’s Office.
Several former Feci prosecutors are prosecuted or have arrest warrants, actions that have been described by them as criminalization for having imprisoned dozens of officials implicated in corruption cases.
In addition, several former judges and former prosecutors are in exile, from where they point to the existence of a plan to weaken the Guatemalan justice system.
One of them is the head of the Feci, Juan Francisco Sandoval, who left the country after being dismissed on instructions from the attorney general. María Consuelo Porras, who was included by the US in a list of actors.
