Artisan Scholarship recipients receive seed capital
El Progreso, Oct 12 (AGN).- Entrepreneurs from San Antonio La Paz and San Agustín Acasaguastlán, El Progreso, received a contribution of 1,200 quetzals, after successfully completing the training provided by the Ministry of Social Development (Mides)through the Artisan Scholarship program.
Mothers of families and heads of households benefited from the project, through which they learned to make different products that they can market. In order for them to start their business, Mides grants them the aforementioned contribution.
The favored ones learned to make baskets with plastic string, clothing and piñatas, as well as food, hygiene products and jewelry, among others.
According to the authorities, business strengthening issues are also addressed during the courses, in response to the Guatemalan Economy Reactivation Plan. This has as one of its priorities the creation of opportunities for entrepreneurship.

The Artisan Scholarship program is aimed at low-income women, who are supported in strengthening their skills in the production of handicrafts. It is taken as a basis for the registration of beneficiaries who do not have formal employment and have skills for making handicrafts.
The goal is to strengthen and develop those skills through training, to improve family income. According to Mides, the project is especially oriented towards rural areas and the organization of groups to improve their productivity.
The training lasts 40 hours and, if the entrepreneurs meet 80 percent attendance and demonstrate that they have learned what was taught, they are given seed capital of 1,200 quetzales so that they can exploit their new knowledge.

According to the authorities, this type of action also seeks the economic empowerment of womenthus contributing to gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth.
The Government of Guatemala promotes various programs in favor of the female population. One of them is the aforementioned, which is executed with the support of local governments.
