President delivers food to people sheltered in Morales, Izabal

Guatemala City, Oct 11 (AGN).- President Alejandro Giammattei supervised this Tuesday the delivery of food to people sheltered in Morales, Izabal, after the passage of the Tropical Cyclone Julia in the national territory.

As President, I am very sorry for what is happening. We are going to do everything possible so that they can return to their homes as soon as possible, in the meantime, we want to support them with hot foodindicated the ruler during a message to the affected population of the place.

The head of the Executive was accompanied by the Minister of Social Development, Raúl Romero; the secretary of Social Communication of the Presidency, Kevin López, and the executive secretary of the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred)Oscar Cossio.

Inter-institutional support

The President said that the aid is being coordinated inter-institutionally and with the support of local governments so that the sheltered can return to their homes without greater danger.

The damage is very great, there are many people like you in different parts of the country. Thanks to the Ministry of Social Development they can have warm food, said the chief executive.

Likewise, the president verified the care provided by Conred together with the Secretary of Social Works of the President’s Wife (SOSEP), in the more than 1,800 shelters set up to care for those affected by this natural phenomenon.

Soup kitchens

Through the Social Kitchens Program, Mides supports Guatemalans affected by storm Julia. This with the aim of promoting food security in the population that does not have access to food.

There are currently 63 soup kitchens available to the population, providing 250 breakfasts and 350 lunches. From that account, approximately 37,800 daily portions are expected to be served.

Food and nutrition security

During his weekly program broadcast by Canal de Gobierno, President Alexander Giammattei mentioned that in the soup kitchens they have served more than 6 millions of rations so far this year.

The president pointed out that what is intended with these spaces is to reinforce the availability and access to food.

For its part, the Social Development Fund also contributes to the nutrition of the population. On this occasion, due to the emergency caused by the passage of tropical cyclone Julia, it will provide a minimum roof, individual cold food rations and bags with basic food for the affected families.
