Governor appreciates ratification of the state of public calamity

Guatemala City, Oct 11 (AGN).- The ruler Alexander Giammattei He thanked the 110 deputies to Congress who ratified the state of public calamity in the country.

I am deeply grateful to the 110 deputies who voted in favor of the state of calamity, the President pointed out on his social networks.

In addition, he pointed out that the ratification of the measure will allow the work led by the Executive to safeguard the lives of families affected by Cyclone Julia to be reinforced.

We are working and will also begin to give an immediate response to build bridges, rebuild affected roads and have access to distant affected communities, added the ruler at a press conference on Tuesday.

Current measures

Government Decree Number 5-2022 includes the declaration of the state of calamity and establishes six measures to comply with during the validity of the measure. These are:

  • implement all actions that tend to address the damage caused by the rains and the effects of tropical cyclone Julia. Also prevent the risk that occurs in all forms, circumstances and places that the situation requires.
  • limit the right to free movement, establishing sanitary cordons and limiting the movement of vehicles or people in the affected areas
  • order the evacuation of the inhabitants of the affected areas or of the areas declared high risk
  • demand from individuals and State institutions the help or cooperation that is essential for better control of the situation in the affected areas
  • order the civil and military authorities to adopt the necessary measures to protect and ensure the life, integrity, insecurity and property of the population
  • centralize in the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred)

Likewise, to guarantee transparency in all processes, the Executive must present a detailed report to Congress. This must contain the details of the measures adopted.
