How to verify if you are affiliated with a political party without authorization?

The Electoral Law and Political Parties (read) guarantees the freedom of Guatemalans to join political parties and its statutes, action that it is more frequent as the electoral process approaches in 2023.

The regulations emphasize thatMembership must be voluntary and more than one political party is prohibitedTherefore, prior to the elections, it becomes the greatest ambition of political organizations in order to “guarantee” the vote in their favor and offer benefits through membership lists.

The above, despite Article 13 of the LEEP orders that citizens are free to cast their vote and no one can directly or indirectly force them to vote for a certain party.

However, in groups of neighbors on WhatsApp, skips the alert of people who appear in affiliation lists without their consent, complaints that also increase as the date to exercise the right to vote approaches.

Francis Quezada, researcher from the Center for National Economic Research (CIEN), says that the data in the affiliation lists is checked in the Citizens Registry, of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) “so people should make sure and know if they are asking for data for affiliation and willingly, grant it“.

To check if you are affiliated with a party, even if the party disappeared 20 years ago, the two ways are:

What to do for disenrollment

Disaffiliation becomes an uphill battle due to the centralization of services, says Quezada, who explains that to disaffiliate it is mandatory to go in person to the TSE headquarters or sub-headquarters, when the procedure should be more practical.

And it is that the LEEP orders that the separation of a party must be express before the party or the Citizens Registry. In the event that the resignation is from a member who holds a position within the party, the decision must be ratified before the Citizens Registry or any of the TSE delegations.

The steps for disenrollment are as follows:

  • The procedure is personal
  • Go to the Registry of Citizens of the TSE or sub-offices of the institution
  • Submit DPI to determine party affiliation
  • Fill out the form for disaffiliation
  • The procedure is firm in three to five days.
