Escuintla, Guatemala Oct 5 (AGN).- President Alejandro Giammattei, during a special ceremony at the National Defense Navy, in Escuintla, led the delivery of a dredging team for the Ubico channel, which will benefit the passage of boats in Escuintla and Santa Rosa.
Today we deliver the dredging equipment, which is already here in eight vans for installation. It’s a high-tech dredger, indicated the president in a special act.
These actions of the Government of Guatemala allow to support especially the fishing community of both departments, since it will create a channel so that the boats can transit in a better way.
The team
The dredger team arrived in eight vans and it is planned to have it ready in about eight days, to then start the dredging work.
We hope to be here in a week or week and a half for the inauguration of the works and to be able to start cleaning this channel, said the president.
The equipment is 25 meters long and weighs 55 tons for assembly.
In addition, authorities reported that it is six meters wide and deep.
After 10 years this project is becoming a reality. The dredger will allow to lift all the waste from the canal. We thank you, Mr President, for the effort for this solution, said Daniel Hernández López, president of the Federation of Pacific Fishing Cooperatives, Limited Liability (Fedepesca RL).

The official stressed that this year the arrival and placement of five dredging facilities at the national level is expected.
Of these, one is from the Ministry of Defense and the portfolio of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing.
The objective is to have more open channels for the transitability and fluidity of vessels in the south of the countrysaid the president.
These will be located in areas where the canals are occupied by garbage.
On the other hand, the Minister of Defense, Henry Reyes, indicated that these actions are part of the instructions issued by the government of President Alejandro Giamattei.
On instructions from the President, we have personnel to work on the placement and implementation of the dredging, the official pointed out.
