Discuss opportunities for joint work in favor of the fight against climate change

Guatemala City, Oct. 7 (AGN).– As part of a work tour in Peru, within the framework of the 52nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mario Bucaro, met with the Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the United States Department of State, Brian A. Nichols.

According to the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry, at the meeting they discussed actions in favor of the fight against climate change.

They addressed opportunities for joint work in favor of the fight against climate change, disaster reduction, transportation, among others, Point out on your social networks.

This meeting also included the participation of the Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), Rudolph Sabonge.

Presidency of the ACS

Currently Guatemala assumes the presidency of the Council of Ministers of the ACS for the period 2022-2023.

In this sense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minex) asserted that in said period Guatemala seeks to promote economic and social development and achieve post-pandemic economic recovery. Also attract investment, encourage tourism and fight against climate change, among other projects. Its work is focused on four axes:

  • cooperation
  • blue diary
  • economic revival
  • migration

The AEC was founded in 1994 and seeks to work in favor of the sustainable development of its members, which currently number 35 countries.

Among them Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, El Salvador, Granada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica and Mexico.

Other meetings

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mario Búcaro, represented Guatemala at the 52 Period of Sessions of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), which is being held in Peru.

During the meeting, the OAS member states discussed strategies to eradicate hunger and promote food security.

Likewise, it seeks to reaffirm the commitment to the protection of human rights.

Another aspect highlighted by the Foreign Ministry is the presentation of a statement on continued support to put an end to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. This in pursuit of suspending the first country as an observer of the OAS.

Likewise, Guatemala is expected to participate in the Dialogue of Representatives of Civil Society Organizations. This will open a space for important discussion to continue laying the foundations towards a more equitable region free of discrimination.

In addition, the Guatemalan foreign minister, Mario Búcaro, is expected to attend bilateral meetings with his counterparts in the region. This will allow bilateral relations and cooperation to be strengthened.
