backstrap loom
The backstrap loom has been an inseparable tool for the Mayan culture, especially for the women of this association.
Backstrap loom weaving is an ancient technique that consists of entangling multicolored threads in a weft to create a cultural effect that gives a linguistic and social meaning, Chiquivil explained.
This technique consists of crossing and intertwining the threads to give life to the idea of the craftswoman, who works on the image until she obtains the figure she wants.
This ability is transmitted from grandmothers to mothers, and from these to their daughters, who receive a gift consisting of weaving tools. These women are in charge of not letting this tradition die. For this reason, the fabrics of Atitlán are always identified with a bird, a tradition that is still maintained.
Distinctive
The Consortium of Associations of the Municipality of Santiago Atitlán is one of the 37 companies that received the distinction of White Sealby the central government.
With this distinction, the growth and quality of our organization is promoted, especially to publicize the products that are made by the hands of indigenous women, she pointed out.
The strategy and purpose of the White Seal is to give visibility, recognize, promote and highlight the work carried out by micro, small and medium producers, as well as organized groups. This with a consumer social responsibility approach, which makes it possible to demonstrate the contribution they make in the development of world-class products.
